About Sophie

Sophie is French Canadian from Cornwall Ontario Canada. When she was three years old, her family doctor recommended that she join a dance class to channel her overactive energy.  Sophie started competing in dance across Canada and the US as a teenager and at 14 was cast in her first professional role in a musical theater play.  At age 15, she left home to attend the prestigious Ecole secondaire publique De La Salle, where she studied modern dance and theater.

 

After high school, Sophie attended Randolph Academy in Toronto and then the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria BC.  She worked throughout Canada as a dancer and was hired as a performer for Disney Cruise Line and Tokyo Disneyland.Once back in Canada, Sophie continued to teach dance and became the head of the Jazz Department at the Dena Wosk School of Performing Arts in Vancouver, BC.  Sophie choreographed for Amnesty International, the Canadian College of Performing Arts, University of Ottawa and various art films.

 

In 2004, Sophie and her husband moved to LA to pursue a career in dance and acting. Since her arrival in LA, Sophie has choreographed for Hart Pulse Dance, Mixmatch Dance Festival, Studio City Stages, LA Comedy Festival, Smooth Laughs, How to Make it into 101 (short film), Animal Instinct (short film), Pop Stars (Reality TV) and Shaw’s Wedding Belles  to name a few. She’s had the honor or choreographing commercials for Sundance Film Festival and "Scrublovers" medical scrubs.  In 2009 she started her own dance company, Sophie Olson Dance Explosion, which focuses on creating dance films in order to reach a broader audience. In 2011 she produced and choreographed La femme; A Short Dance Film (collaborating with choreographer Amanda Hart) which will screen at the VMS Short Film Channel in 2012.

 

Sophie’s passion for music videos has led her to work with Chilean Pop Star Yael Meyer (Lollapalooza 2012) as the choreographer of two music videos; Fire and Use to Be. In addition, Sophie also had the honor of choreographing In the Sun and Don’t Look Back for the indie band "She and Him" (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) as well as the opening credits of the pilot for "New Girl" for FOX. Sophie’s most recent choreography is an interactive music video for "New Girl" premiering February 2012.
